State officials in West Virginia are removing the residency requirement for school superintendents in the hopes of helping school boards expand their leadership applicant pools. Lawmakers argue it will be especially helpful in county takeover situations.
Senate Bill 694 now heads to Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s desk for final approval, The Real WV reports. The bill has received positive feedback since the testimony hearings conducted last month.
“Having been in [human resources] as an HR director for eight years, I can tell you that Pendleton County has lost several applicants because we did not have a place for them to reside,” testified Nicole Hevener, superintendent of Pendleton County Schools, adding that home rentals are scarce in the county.
