Beyond the Science of Reading: Connecting Literacy Instruction to the Science of Learning
The science of reading movement has taken the education world by storm, but it’s often seen as being just about phonics. In fact, there’s a lot of science related to reading that goes beyond phonics—and most schools are using methods that conflict with it. The evidence also indicates that reading and writing should be taught together, with students writing about what they’ve read—and that both reading and writing should be taught not just in ELA but also in subjects like history and science.
In this presentation, education writer Natalie Wexler will connect the science related to literacy to the overall science of learning. She will also explain how schools can provide students with all the benefits of science-informed teaching—and more—by using a curriculum that is rich in content and explicitly teaching students to write about that content.
