3.2.1: On finding games worth winning, the power of making a lot and choosing the best, and two types of kindness
Being kind to others is mostly about your actions.
Being kind to yourself is mostly about your thoughts.
II.
There is no need to fear any problem you are working on. If you are working on it, then you are influencing the outcome.
It’s the problems you don’t address that should concern you.
Making professional development count

How do teachers across the globe view professional development? This is a question that the main author (Mary) has been asking teachers during in-depth interviews for the last two years in her work as an education researcher. After talking with 136 teachers in 29 countries across six continents, Mary was not surprised to find that teachers’ experiences with PD vary greatly. Many had never participated in professional development but were eager for the opportunity. Others participated in PD opportunities but were disappointed by their lack of relevance; and a fortunate group were empowered and engaged by the PD in which they participated.
New plan from the White House

In 2022, the Biden administration called for 250,000 tutors and mentors to rescue what some have called the pandemic’s “lost generation.”
The White House, which has faced criticism for not doing enough for students who fell dramatically behind in math and reading, had something to show for it Thursday. An estimated 323,000 college students, volunteers and school staff signed up — not only exceeding the administration’s goal, but hitting it nine months ahead of schedule.
Arlington ISD setting metrics for Strategic Plan

Arlington ISD sets 2025 student performance goals. Trustees worry some are unrealistic
Students in Arlington ISD face higher performance expectations heading into 2025, prompting some school board members to worry the district’s new goals are too ambitious.
At an Oct. 3 school board meeting, trustees were presented with the district’s annual goals for how administrators hope to see students perform year-to-year. The school board approved the new goals with a 6-1 vote, with trustee Larry Mike dissenting.
During the board meeting, Mike and other trustees advocated for lowering some goals in areas he felt seemed unachievable.
Emergent Bilingual students face challenges

While the average American student has recovered about one-third of pandemic learning losses in math and about a quarter in reading, many others are still struggling in COVID’s wake. This includes many of the nation’s linguistically diverse students. Representing more than 10% of the U.S. K-12 population, English learners are a significant, and growing, group who continue to grapple with academic performance, inequitable access to opportunities, mental health challenges and chronic disengagement. But because of persistent data gaps, information about English learners’ academic recovery remains incomplete and unclear.
Servant Leaders

You didn’t wake up thinking, “I want other people to run my life.”
Healthy people want power to make decisions. Normal people want a voice.
Dominance perverts a healthy urge for power.
